While I think there are no obvious offenders here, there are points where things simply drag, lose cohesion, or don’t work as well as they could or should. I will never forget how much fun I had with these songs the first several times I’d heard them.Ĭonsequently, because Primus is so experimental, some things just kinda fall flat. Baker” absolutely nails the “singing in character” gimmick prevalent on this album. Baker” are an excellent showcase of Les’s awesome bass playing, and “Sgt. In particular, “Those Damned Blue-Collar Tweekers” and “Sgt. Baker”, “Jerry Was A Race Car Driver”, and “Those Damned Blue-Collar Tweekers.” They do an excellent job of showcasing the strengths of this album, and Primus as a whole, without too many pitfalls.

My three favorite tracks here are definitely “Sgt. Having bass guitar be the main instrument in metal is really non-traditional, but is executed so well here. Rejected by Metallica for being “too good” (this a true story, it’s pretty nutty), Les is the architect of Primus’s distinct bass-driven funk-metal sound that makes them so awesome. In their case, it’s the ever eccentric Les Claypool.

Primus is another band defined by one genius at its core. While that luster has certainly faded a tad for me, I still like their stuff, with my favorite being Sailing the Seas of Cheese. After that, I was super hooked on Primus for a few weeks. Honestly, their performance was far more memorable than Slayer’s was. Their music was incredibly unique and unlike anything I’d ever heard before in the best way possible, and their energy and stage presence was off the charts. Because I was already excited for the main show and another one of the opening acts, I hadn’t even thought to check out Primus’s music before the show. Because this was a pretty huge event in the metal community, this show had 3 separate opening acts. My dad and I had gotten tickets to see the almighty Slayer on their global farewell tour. I don’t think I will ever forget the first night I was introduced to Primus. This is Sailing the Seas of Cheese by Primus from 1991. This week we have a bit of an odd album, but one I have a personal soft spot for.
